have you ever wondered what old manila looked like before the war? below are two videos that show exactly just that. the first one is a collection of video clips around manila. one of the songs that accompany it is "maybe" by the ink spots (which i've featured in an earlier entry).
the second video is by andre de la varre, who created it in 1938 after he visited manila. it is entitled "manila, queen of the pacific."
many thanks to señor enrique for the heads-up on these vids. enjoy! =)

ReplyDeleteFinally, you're back! :) How have you been? Just stopped by to say hi and to let you know that I'm glad to see you're blogging again. Ingat. :)
ReplyDeletei wish i've seen the old manila in person.

ReplyDeletesadly, manila never recovered after the WWII. but we can still se traces of its once elegant splendor. these video just proved it.
old manila is v beautiful!!! thanks for sharing, ate c!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHmm, there seem to be a lot of these videos of old Manila going around the local blogosphere. Maybe it is for the better, at least to remind Pinoys --- Manilans especially --- of how great their city was during the American occupation before being run like hell by the locals.
ReplyDeletebakit nagpi-play lang yung video for two seconds? hehehe o ako yung me problema :)
ReplyDeletekung seryoso lang sa preservation ng heritage ang mga nandito sa manila, maibabalik pa yan, kaso di nila alam kung ano yun. :(
r-yo: good old days they were... *sigh* =)
ReplyDeletepanaderos: thanks! i'm doing good so far, lots of new things happening for me =) will be visiting your blog really soon =)
the dong: same here! what wouldn't i give to travel back in time. =) thanks! =)
lawstude: thanks! =) it makes me really glad that someone took the time to post those on youtube. =)
acey: you're very much welcome! =)
rudy: true, true. maybe then the people would do something to restore or at least make the city as beautiful as it was before the war. hehe, you should read the comments on these vids in youtube. ;-)
zherwin: at yun ang problema. hayyy.
=)
youtube is like a video version of search engine. I love that site.
ReplyDeletebased on the video, manila looks much cleaner compared to todays. at mukhang buhay pa ang ilog pasig, hehehe. pero ang intramuros, parang ganon pa rin. it still looks majestic ;)
ReplyDeleteyou're back! weeeee!
ReplyDeletekris jasper: same here. minsan nga nakakahanap ako dun ng rare songs. =)
ReplyDeletesardonicnell: so true. at kahit ganun na ang itsura ng intramuros gusto ko pa ring binabalikan yun. (tanggalin lang nila yung mga squatters) =)
coldman: yupyup! =)
Have you tried Celdran's walking tour? It's very educational! He's very funny not boring!
ReplyDeleteNatuwa naman ako nyan. parang I warped back in time. Nakita ko pa yung "Tivoli" ice cream na brand. hehe
ReplyDeleteadel: hi there! yup i went on his intramuros walking tour about two years ago. i loved it! =)
ReplyDeleteferdz: oo nga eh. nakakatuwa no, feeling mo andun ka din sa era na yun. =) tagal na pala nung ice cream brand na yun. interesting :D
Napanood ko na rin itong dalawang videos na ito. Nostalgic and I thought I was not lucky enough to have personally witnessed the scene in my lifetime...
ReplyDelete(or maybe they were not lucky enough to have the internet during those times :D)
loving the old Manila vids.
ReplyDelete:)
loved these old vids. when i was still at museo ng maynila, we made a series of exhibits before-during-and after the war. complete with motion-sensor triggered audio-visual effects. i wish we could have used something like this.
ReplyDeletedodong: i have the same thoughts you have. thank God for whoever filmed those vids and were able to preserve them for uploading decades later. :D
ReplyDeleteretro manila: glad you liked them =) thanks for dropping by!
caryn: wow! i wish i'd known about those exhibits. they must have been great. =) thanks for dropping by!
