secret wish

as i type this out, this secret wish won't be so secret anymore. ;-)

i've been to a lot of places already, but there is one where i secretly wish to travel to. unfortunately, it will never happen, not in this lifetime. i wish to travel back through time, may it be during the medieval times or world war ll. wherever it may be, it doesn't matter. which is probably the reason for my affinity for anything old--houses, the people, music, etc. simply by looking at old houses will make one think of the people who have lived there before and the events that happened in that era. same thing goes for music (at least, for me). who sang the song? what year did it first come out? are there other versions of this song? who's the original singer?

and the questions could go on, and on, and on...

so even though i can't literally travel back through time, i could by listening to old songs. one really old song that i recently rediscovered while surfing the net is called "if you were the only girl in the world." i first heard the song in the tv show charmed about seven years ago and i was easily... charmed by the way they were able to make the guy sound like he came from the 1920's (the episode's setting was in 1924). the song was actually released in 1916, music written by clifford gray and lyrics by nat d. ayer. it was used in the musical the bing boys are here and was sung by george robey and violet loraine. (from firstworldwar.com and wikipedia.org)

if you want to listen to the original song, click here. you have to click another link from the webpage to open it in windows media player.

there's also another version of this song (instrumental). havalisten, just press play!

lyrics:
If You Were the Only Girl in the World

Sometimes when I feel low
and things look blue
I wish a boy I had... say one like you.
Someone within my heart to build a throne
Someone who'd never part, to call my own

If you were the only girl in the world
and I were the only boy
Nothing else would matter in the world today
We could go on loving in the same old way

A garden of Eden just made for two
With nothing to mar our joy
I would say such wonderful things to you
There would be such wonderful things to do
If you were the only girl in the world
and I were the only boy.

all right, shall i call dr. emmett brown now? :D

  1. Oooh...very romantic. I've never heard that before.

It is very romantic to think of traveling back in time (although I get worried about their plumbing system... or what if they enslave me or something? :) ). There are so many enchanting eras and places to go to. Myself, if the time machine is ever invented, I would pay a visit to my ancestors... see who I take after. :)

Well, traveling back in time has pros and cons but it'd never happen to all of us. Meh!

  5. And since you're on the subject of old songs, try to listen to the most recorded song in the last century, "Stardust". No, not the version of Nat King Cole but the original sung by Hoagy Carmichael back in 1927. :-)

  6. toe: heyyy, that would be interesting. just be careful not to change you're family's history. ^^

pusa: lol talaga? kahit ilang beses kong pinakinggan di ako inantok sa song.. sige kung magkakaron nga ng time machine sabay tayo parang sa back to the future =)

kyels: it is, isn't it? =) yeah, too bad but then at least we've got history to tell us all about it. =)

    aryo: isasama kita hahaha! =)

rudy: wow! sige sige i'll check that out. come to think of it, baka narining ko na yang song pero di ko maalala ang tune.. =)

  7. you know what makes old songs clicked? the musicality. compare any song from today to those of the 40's or 50's or even 60's and the 70's, kahit yung tunog ng drums malinis sa old songs.

    hehehe, isa pang makaluma. :)

  10. Now I'm wondering why you never pursued history or anthropology as a career.

Wishing you the very best on this Holiday Season!
